Record-Breaking Year for LAE aspiring medics

LAE’s Pathway to Medical, Dentistry and Veterinary (MDV) careers has resulted in record-breaking numbers of university offers this year with 40 applicants holding offers to study Medicine, Dentistry or Veterinary Medicine, a 25% increase in students holding at least one offer compared to our previous record year of 2019.

With many students holding multiple undergraduate offers, we are delighted for all students but we are particularly pleased that almost two thirds of applicants classified as being from deprived backgrounds will be continuing to their chosen career thanks to the comprehensive and unique LAE Pathway to MDV.

The Pathway to MDV, begins in year 12, and provides LAE students with the opportunity to explore the diverse careers within MDV fields. Students attend a term of sessions and trips to places like the Alexander Fleming Museum and the Association of Anaesthetists, as well as taking part in a healthcare conference where they gain experience in researching and presenting healthcare topics.

This term of exploration allows students to decide whether MDV is the right career for them. They then continue on and attend ongoing weekly sessions from the summer term of Year 12 until well into the spring term of Year 13.  Pathway to MDV sessions include:

  • work experience advice
  • entrance exam preparation (UCAT/BMAT)
  • personal statement advice and workshops
  • interview preparation for MMI and Panel interviews.
  • advice on making competitive applications

Our staff also write references for work experience placements, provide feedback, conduct mock interviews internally and with our partner schools and give students one-to-one Advice and Guidance sessions.

"We're very proud of all the hard work put in by our applicants this year - regardless of the outcome of their application. They really have been a fantastic group of students to work with.”
