Modern Foreign Language Scholarships

The MFL Department at LAE is seeking to enrol up to five ambitious and committed linguists on a brand-new scholarship programme. 

Successful applicants are expected to continue their language study at LAE throughout both years.  

 

Key information: 

Value: the four sessions with a Mentor are priceless in terms of careers guidance and personal development; you will also be awarded £200 in two stages, pending completion of expectations.

Available to: offer holders who have chosen French, Spanish and/or Italian as one of their main subjects. 

Selection criteria: GCSE prior attainment and a letter of application demonstrating commitment

Eligibility:  

  • Grade 9 in a Modern Foreign Language, and 8+ in English, History and/or Geography, and Maths. 

  • Study at least one of the following languages at LAE: French, Italian and/or Spanish. 

  • Intend to pursue modern languages (or related subject, e.g. linguistics) as a degree or part of a joint honours degree at university, 

The programme is open to non-native speakers only although native speakers who study more than one language will be considered for a scholarship on a case by case basis.  

Requirements:  

As a MFL Scholar, you will be supported to take on additional academic challenges to develop your intercultural and linguistic skills. These include: 

  • EPQ: MFL scholars are expected to pick a topic that relates closely or broadly to one of your studied language's cultural areas (s). At least one of your sources will be in one of your target languages.  

  • MOOC: MFL scholars are expected to complete an online course relating to MFL.  

  • Super curricular: Scholar will be expected to participate in at least one essay or translation competition in Year 12.

University Extension:  

All scholars interested in applying to study languages at university will be offered an extension programme. 

Mentorship:  

All scholars will be connected with professionals from a variety of industries. Mentors will meet scholars online or in-person throughout the academic year to discuss how important languages are in their day-to-day jobs and receive invaluable advice on studying and preparing for the world of work.  

Work and Study Abroad:   

Studying and working abroad is a true life-enriching experience. There are so many benefits from taking part in such a unique experience, from improving your language skills and confidence, to enhancing your CV, not to mention all of the amazing people and new friends made along the way. The MFL Department offers a one-week work and study package to all linguists. MFL Scholars will be prioritised and may benefit from additional financial support to cover parts of the cost of the trip. 

Publish an article:  

Opportunity to write an article for the Lexicon, the Eton College MFL publication.   

MFL Scholarship Grant:  

A £200 grant will be awarded to all scholars (£100 in each year, first payment in summer term of Year 12, and second payment in autumn term of Year 13)
